Association of Corporate Citizenship Professionals (ACCP) Survey of 125 Major Companies Shows a 16% Increase over Last Year’s Increase, Continuing Rise since COVID Pandemic

FAIRFAX, VA – Ahead of #GivingTuesday next Tuesday, December 3rd, survey data recently released by the Association of Corporate Citizenship Professionals (ACCP), the nation’s leading advocate for corporate social impact professionalsreveals the rate of participation in workplace volunteerism continues to rise. According to ACCP’s 2024 CSR Insights Survey, 77% of respondents indicated they saw an increase in participation rates for employee volunteer activities this year, marking a 16% increase from 2023 when 61% saw an increase in employee volunteerism.

This increase stands in contrast to a recently released report by the Generosity Commission highlighting a significant decline in volunteering in the United States. The increase in the corporate sector is a bright star in the volunteerism landscape.

One of the ACCP report’s top findings showed that employee engagement budgets either increased or stayed the same this year, with 88% of respondents saying this was the case at their companies. This is up from 71% last year, while 22% of respondents said they have seen increased expectations from employees to have a voice in CSR decisions in their companies, compared to 18% in 2023.

“Employee volunteerism continues to be an important way that companies align corporate and employee values. Our survey data suggests that the workplace is increasingly becoming a place where employees can fulfill the upcoming Giving Tuesday’s mission to ‘pursue radical generosity’,” said Association of Corporate Citizenship Professionals (ACCP) president and CEO Carolyn Berkowitz. “Employees are drawn to companies with robust giving and volunteerism programs and such opportunities result in greater employee engagement and satisfaction.”

In a recent Inc article, “It’s a Great Time for Giving Back. But Don’t Leave Out Remote Workers,” featuring insights from ACCP staff explores the continued importance of virtual volunteering opportunities indicating “companies offer options ranging from remote tutoring sessions for high school students to working on a collective digital project, such as mapping areas susceptible to natural disasters.” The article further suggests “with those key factors established, company leaders can work with their employees to figure out the right cadence for these opportunities.”  ACCP’s survey data is compiled from the organization’s 5th Annual CSR Insights Survey of 125 companies representing more than $1 billion in community investments conducted in April 2024.

“Employee volunteerism fosters societal good while delivering benefits to the business. A recent IBM study showed that 70% of job seekers are more likely to apply for and accept an offer from socially responsible companies,” Berkowitz concludes.
